Stress Management

Although it is impossible to avoid daily stressors, managing the ways that we deal with stress can significantly improve overall health. Discovering strategies to help us cope with stress is necessary. Some methods that have been shown to reduce stress include:

  • Movement (yoga, exercise, walking, dancing)

  • Meditation

  • Gratitude (ex. keeping a journal to write down anything for which you are thankful)

  • Deep breathing techniques

  • Taking time for hobbies

  • Music

  • Connecting with others

  • Seeking professional help when needed

Not all Stress is Bad Stress.

Many times, a small amount of stress is necessary for optimum performance, whether that be in an athletic event, important exam, or working towards achieving a large goal. What is typically considered “bad stress” is stress that leads to poor performance. This stress can worsen mental health and lead to anxiety and depression. It is important to learn how to recognize good stress from bad stress.
